Events of the Episode
- The episode was for 38 minutes and the action director for the episode was Prem Sharma. Screen play is by Gautam Hegde and Janaki V. Dialogue writer is Raghubir Shekhawat. Associate Art director is Rajeev Ranjan who helped in that Art decor for the Scene. Ofcourse the primary Art Director is Sumit Mishra. The episodic story was written by Shivani Shah and Abhishek Kumar. The editing team is as always Rochak Ahuja, Hemant Singh, Vaalendra Singh. DOP is Ganesh Sankla, who must have assisted Prem Sharma closely. Overall director of the episode is Amit D Malik. The entire Action Drama at the lakeside set created for MEIEJ in Film City has cost 25 lakhs per Producer and story writer Sourabh Tewari.
- Since it is action based episode, it is best judged when one views it and each can rate according to his taste. However, I would like to mention that effort was worth it. Such an investment in action for a soap is good development. For me it suits. It tells me that Producers are no longer sticking to indoor shoots. And the trend should continue on for other soaps as well. As it is TV industry is doing very well.
Personally I have loved the action drama and I express my gratitude to MEIEJ Production team (Colors and Nautanki Films) for showing this presentation. Nowadays I do not watch movies. I fall into the middle aged person category, who usually stop growing in new cinema tastes owing to their real life experiences and other worries. For them TV remains the Time Pass medium. So for me seeing this action drama was like what I used to like in movies back then and I can still enjoy it on TV. No strings attached factor for my middle age persona and yet 100% entertained.
Today was supposed to the BIG DAY for ACTION DIRECTOR PREM SHARMA along with the regular writing team. And it was a 50 Minute Mahaepisode with run time of 38 minutes. So I wanted to review the entire 38 minutes of content presentation.
The first 10 minutes
Honestly, the first 10 minutes was not that impressive. The action and emotion could not be blended and instead of logical action, it seemed the idiotic action remnant of most Bollywood movies from Prakash Mehra Action movies; he was the one who made AB a Hit in those days, check out the action in those movies...worst action, body dupes and rushed action...always a disconnect from the main movie when AB came to fight his goons. Today's action scenes were also remnant of late 80's action movies with no sense or purpose behind the action...check out action movies such as Loha...basically you can check all Dharmender movies in mid to late 80's after AB movies stopped clicking with mass movies.
RK declares to everyone that he is Real and Reel life Hero. The dialogues for RK were to justify why he is without bodyguards and why he is so fearless. So he answers the viewers, who have actually forgotten his Intro scene in June that RK does his own stunts. Hmmm ! RK is versatile actor, he is a romance hero + action hero.
Worst dialogue of the Day - Radhaji...Jitne Paise Chaahiye tumhe, hum de denge. She just undermined Balraj's coup as having Mercenary Motive, stamping a feeling that MB heritage is poor. Koi is aurat ko samjhaaye...that Choudhry family was richer than yours and it just now a revenge drama.
Dialogues were OTT, Dance not Impressive and Scenes too contrived.
Coming back again to Action Directing from Prem Sharma and the Screen Play. I am really not sure, technically how it works. But my gut feel is that the action director will tell the screen play writer and dialogue writer, how he wants the scenes to be written which are conducive to his action scenes. Then I must say it was a shoddy job. The man just seems to be a brawn without brain. Sudden inexplicable appearance of dancers on the set . He should have shown a shot them landing on the action scene in a vehicle...would have made sense as part of Balraj's overall plan. Entertainment cannot be so inexplicable in outskirts of city where there is no other Human Population visible.
11th to 20th minute
Panic sets in. Heart Beat rises. Even as we wonder why Balraj is not shooting Madhu and why he keeps dilly-dallying with the trigger...
Then comes the Flying Bike that never lands. LoL
And look at Balraj's wondrous eyes...he is like...what's happening ?? What do I see here ?
And the circling of the Bike Never Stops. LoL
Balraj calls his Damaad a Draamebaaz!!!!
And the RK dialogues start...RK's appointment dates for his Mout (Death). LoL !! And the dialogues between Daamaad and Real Sasur get interesting with Bitua, Shooting with Guns and not Cameras, Encounter, Cross firing etc etc... Lovely !!!
OMG!!! A grenade launcher to nuke RK !!!!!. This was like RK's introduction scene in MEIEJ OMG!!!!! RK flying through the Fire. How is that even possible. Doesn't Newton's law of gravitation apply over him????? Oh He Fell ...Finally. Very Badly Done Scene. B Grade or C Grade????
Emotional Music starts...Everyone is crying...Madhu is chanting her Hauslon Se Veer Hoon Mantra to revive the fallen RK.
21st to 30th minute
Okay Padmini and Trishna chanting the Hauslon se veer hoon ...did not make any sense to me.
Uth RK Uth jaap replaces Hauslon se Veer hoon. (ETA: Angeena reminded me that this jaap is taken from Satte Pe Satta movie).
Bells Ring too. Devi maa seems to have come to Madhu's camp...
Why is Balraj not shooting Madhu and end the drama ?????
RK wakes up with Devi Maa's blessing.
But why are the Goons not warning Balraj that RK is waking up ?? They come to Balraj's rescue only when he is in physical danger. Seems Balraj did not pay them for using their brains. Seems the fee is only for their brawn. That's why they do not feed any intelligence to Balraj...no warning, no messaging..
The scuffle between RK and Balraj only leads to end of ever waiting of shooting Madhu down. Finally...What Balraj, for this you needed RK !!!!!
Dips is so happy !!!! They did not forget her. Well of course. Must say, they have not forgotten the supporting cast. Everyone has been nicely giving their reactions. I liked that.
Madhu's stool is shot and all VD's expressions are...is it for real ? How is the scene actually done ? I mean he has no panic for the loss, he is just analysing the scene. Oh! runs to rescue her...
God!!! after this, watching and reviewing the scene is plain unfathomable to me. BECAUSE IT IS NOT MAKING ANY SENSE TO ME. It just goes over my head. And I can go to sleep.
31st to 38th minute
I wake up from my sleepy state. Madhu freed herself as RK keeps supporting her in her air suspension mode while he gets beaten up with nothing happening to him as if he is a boxing punch bag.
Oh!! Madhu joined RK to become the boxing punch bag. She didn't want RK to have the entire fun. They have time for eye-locks as well.
Anyways...some shooting technique changed here. RK's fight with Balraj appears in dark light (evening light). BADDD!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I cannot review here...as I got emotionally involved in the scene, watching the fight. RK was about to kill Balraj and Madhu stopped him.
The Police arrived. Bittuji brought the Police Hmmm!!!
Again I got emotionally involved watching the action...could not review the last 3 minutes. There was a scuffle between Balraj and everyone, where he had held Madhu as his hostage, only to be scene ending with blood trickling down Madhu. Surprise Surprise...Per the precap, its not Madhu's blood but Balraj's blood. Padmini shot Balraj.
B rating... I changed it from B minus to B. Because in restrospect, this kind of action for TV is first time. TV screenplay is not the same as shooting for film. In TV the continuity is lost as writers have to give logical breaks between AD breaks to continue holding viewer attention. Most of the time the scene should break so that it becomes recalling to the viewer. And I have to dig more info on Prem Sharma before I judge him.

Even in this action packed episode, Madhu and RK Love was shown to the hilt. Everything was consistent. For me the takeaway was the magical effect of calm that Madhu provides to RK when he felt it okay to end Balraj in the heat of the moment. And loving Madhu is like "Sar pe kafan baandh ke chalo" for her parents and her husband. And strangely enough, it became even a sort for Radha.
The best I liked today was performances from RZ and supporting cast (other than Madhu and RK). Shamsher, Padmini and Radha, inspite of their OTT dialogues, delivered their best in that "boxed" capacity. Dips, Sikky were good in their silent responses. Trishna was trying to save her ass by being supportive to her family as if that's gonna save her tomorrow.

Trishna was trying to save her ass by being supportive to her family as if that's gonna save her tomorrow.
Balraj was the Hero of the Episode. Raj Zutshi, even if this was a cameo role, his role was powerful one. Leaves his Impact on the show. And all evil needs to end, so he is having an end in a GRAND STYLE. Must say he has been an investment and expense to Sourabh Tewari and Nautanki Films. He gave TRP before too. I am interested to know how this week's TRP fares. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Given a chance Shamsher would have beaten Balraj black and blue, but it was like he had his glory 20/22 years back. Now it was the time for RK and Padmini and hence he needed to be held captive which actually made no sense at all considering he is the fightmaster and like RK fully capable of action/stunts.
Radha, when she calls out to Balraj, she surprised even Kuku and family. As in when and where did this woman develop a voice. But then Radha may not look as we want of her, but we know, she is a voice of moral decorum and the sense of big picture, just like Madhu has, That's why the daughter in law and mother in law blend so much, They think alike in many ways. So here when she confronted Balraj, she could get that energy because MAdhu was her Son's Lifeline. She knows she can lose her son if Madhu is not there. So all her firepower bursts forth. Anyways, seems the PH has heard our pleas and from past episodes since the beginning of Jan, Radha has been shedding less tears. So Radha call was beyond, human and relational aspect. It was for her life vested in her son whose life was vested in Madhu.
Trishna was classic case of retribution started in quick paced manner. The way she betrayed her family by being more concerned about her ambition, she immediately started trying to get back in he fold by being with her father (calling Malik), chanting with her mother (Hauslon se veer hoon). calling RK (trying to get into Madhu's good books). Her's was need of the hour strategy and I buy it...as in I know why she is doing that. But what she doesn't understand is her family has lost a lot of trust on her. She can only dream to get back the old status. So I liked these elements in the drama through Trishna character.
Sikky, Dips and Kuku
Sikky's human side is visible. He is full of foibles and concerns. He loved the dance and yet he was visibly concerned to see Madhu in peril. No wonder why Radhaji did not fail to check on Sikky's security when Balraj coup started. Kuku remains indifferent and Dips remains only selfishly interested.
Who are left then? Padmini and RK. Closest to Madhu...one through blood and other as lifeline. Sometimes, it makes me wonder, why Padmini and RK would have "Sar pe kafan baandh ke chalo" types pyaar for Madhu.
Well any mother will have that for her child. Padmini is no exception...but Madhu is an exception; for getting that strange father and inheriting his blood. There are formidable qualities in Madhu, which one can feel the warmth only when interacting with her. Here is a woman who doesn't have anything to think about her except small things and her loved ones around her. Without any desire, ambition, Madhu has no weakness left and when it comes to choosing between right and wrong, she would even be able to convince her mother, father and even her husband that she needs to die if that is right thing to happen. She has that much of charismatic hold on everyone, which we all know as to be crazy element in her. True, if one doesn't have that, one would not have forged ahead. She had that and that's why she pulled back her husband to a life that he now loves...a life with feeling. She had that and passed on that feeling to her mother when still in womb of her mother. It is not cliched to think in that sense, but sometimes, the mother and child communicate in that pre-natal manner. Padmini knows life away from the Rakshas is so much better and all thanks to her daughter in her womb.
But all that is at deeper mental level, you want to see the trickling down small things...the way Madhu calls her mother...as Tu and keeps taking care of her...more like a friend...and then RK...ever since RK allowed her come closer to him, she doesn't lose even in one opportunity to keep bonding with him in her balming touch. She holds him, she clings to him and in both the ways, I keep reading her way as her need to pass on her positive energy to him and taking his inner fear out.,,,like Touch Therapy. Yes,,,,,any angry person would mellow down only if pulled back through touch...question is how many of us like to take care of an angry and hurting person ????!
Did RK, have a flashback to his father's death when he saw Madhu dangling from the noose?
Angeena, Zoya and few others felt that strongly. And logically it makes sense. But if I was the director, I would have added a flashback in RK's mind. People may think, action scenes mein flashbacks ka kya kaam...but then I ask why not. Action does not sell, if emotion is not blended, else it all becomes reckless and meaningless. There was an opportunity here and they missed it. So one flashback to banta tha. They did not do that. And anytime RK wants to think about his dad, that hanging scene is shown. Hope they stop it now...
As for me, I was too involved in watching action, so when Madhu's stool is shot, my panic levels raised and I was yelling to RK in my mind, Run to hold her...what are you looking at ?????
I was reading this "The three Mistakes of Life"...there too the man for a split second stops to think instead of acting on reflex, as in he needs to pull a man from incoming launch and save him as the target, and that costs an accident. In action, one doesn't have time to think and can act only on reflex. So I did not see RK remembering his Dad's hanging...but since they showed the shot of RK deliberating, then it made sense to show a flashback as to what he was thinking in that split second.

For me the star of the episode was Balraj. He was having ball being and doing everything that is insane and mad. But, best of all, he didn't give a damn about what anyone else thought. There was no awkwardness or sense of self in Raj Zutshi ... He was BSC. Absolutely brilliant.
The other thing was after Madhu stops RK from killing Balraj, RK actually seemed to be coming out of some sort of trance .. I guess the fact that his dad died by hanging and seeing Madhu about to die the same way (sort of) was too much.
But I do wonder ... The whole thing must have been as amusing to the actors as it is to us if not more. How do they manage to keep a straight face and even better do a semblance of acting?
Btw .. the chanting was taken from the movie "Satte Pe Satta" I think.

It was truly an entertaining paisa vasool action episode today... As I said yday less brain, more brawn very like the 80's n 90's movies... Everyone did a fab job and the money spent was completely worth it... I enjoyed the mindless action.. There were times where I felt a disconnect but for most parts I was satisfied n remained connected...
RZ gets a standing ovation for his wonderful performance... I loved him...He was sheer brilliant in every frame he appeared..
VD was too good in all the scenes be it the action ones or when he sees that madhu is hanging in mid air.. It prolly conjured up a memory of his father or when after madhu stops him from killing Ballu n he is still in a reverie till she brings him out of it...
Madhu was too good... Her cOnfidence in her maula was one to watch out for..
Silky was hilarious when he was wanting to dance but he was worried for both madhu
Malik was the only disappointment for me...others did an equally good job
Indian police came at the expected right time when all the fighting was over...
On the whole, a job well done by the entire team if certain glitches can be ignored for the overall entertainment factor..This was the first time attempted on Indian television on such a large scale and kudos to the entire team for it... I once again repeat that, for me, it was worth every penny the makers spent for this sequence.

What Shri wrote really got me interested in how action is scripted, both in movies and in telly. How does the action director use the script; which comes first, etc.? I started reading all over the internet about it, just for fun, and thought this piece from U.S. was particularly clarifying:
I know that might not be at all interesting for many
but just if you were curious on the subject!

One thing that kept coming up in all the articles I read was that the script writers should make the hero strong, but the villain stronger, so that the hero's eventual triumph is hard-won and thus cathartic for the audience.
Well, Ballu is certainly a strong villain, if you are thinking in terms of frank insanity. He is like evil distilled and crystallised in a beaker over a high-degree bunsen burner. But the balance between him and RK (if RK is the hero in this scenario...you might argue that it is Madhu. Or, eventually, Padmini...or maybe all three
) seems slightly off. I felt the same thing with this epi that I felt with many earlier epis of the series, that the writers seem quite often to have their characters on the shifting sands. Pehle aise, phir jaise - never completely consistent unless they are dealing in two-dimensions, as with Dips or Sikky. At first I thought that they were doing this with a purpose - to make the tracks unpredictable and unique among telly soaps. But now I wonder they were not just trying to keep things rolling in an improvisatory way, perhaps not having expected the show to last this long!

Bhakti,
Thank you for researching there. I liked the article. Gives an altogether different perspective...as in granualar to action itself, the specific episode itself and it not being the entire story. Wow!!!!
From that point, we had villain, hero and prize.
Tip #1: Give your hero a personal problem - He is not on the scene and is being beaten black and blue by goons - How is DARING RK gonna reach the venue where his DARLING Madhu is tied up ?
Tip #2: Make them believe first - Well Madhu with her RK chant made him come back. Unfortunately, our viewers in the ED thread were not convinced by Sourabh Tewari that action is enjoyable. Everyone seemed to lament that action should have taken place on outdoor set rather than indoor set. But I was convinced. But again, the CVs could have made it more convincing for our viewers here by infusing a scene where they showed RK delegating tasks to Bittuji...but then, may be they thought of showing it as surprise.
Tip #3: Plot comes from moving from one surprise to another - This was not there. So many spoilers before the episode. There was no surprise left at all.
Tip #4: Make the Hero strong, but the Opponent stronger - They played this to Hilt. BSC was simply powerful. Bechaara RK pheeka pad gaya. Padmini ko maidaan mein Utarna pada.

This post is to appreciate and cheer the MB team. Kadi dhup mein and within the given constraints the team did do their best. As a fan of this show, I will always want them to gimme more but still their efforts are appreciated.Knowing too much about this well ahead of time probably led to some disappointment.
By the way, when Ballu shoots the stool off of Madhu's feet and she is freely hanging off in the air, how was that scene taken? Any guesses? It was good one.
Thanks Zorica for lovely posters. Enjoyed the analyses posted here.

A rope or harness tied to her waist with a vertical rod with hole at the end or even a rope that pulls her waist up tightly upwards or stays same equivalent to her height from neck to her waist; with another knot tied to the noose knot. So from front the noose is seen, but from behind the opposite support from waist can be seen until the noose knot.
I had wondered earlier, why Madhu got a Lehenga as the wedding dress and not her usual saree. This whole action sequence explains why they chose that dress for her.
And if you noticed, she had characteristically LONG HAIR since the Sangeet segment, hair that touched her waist...I mean longer than previous times. Increasingly Madhu's hair is growing in the soap.
And really the actor more than guts needs to have faith in her crew. And DD having that trust is commendable. The team really enjoyed their effort.

Devika,
Please don't be disappointed. this particular thread always has a good mix of positive and negative views, which is really my reason to visit it every single day. I express myself freely, and we are all united in that we love this serial, love this couple to bits and all of us love the MBEIEJ creative team as well. I sincerely wish that they go through our discussion thread to get a balanced perspective on episodes.
Just for you, let me enumerate what I loved yesterday.
- RK tells the goodas...RK apne stunts khud karta hai!! And beats them all senseless. Ultimately, it is a cowardly peeche se vaar that gets him down!
- Madhu's faith in RK...her hauslon se veer, and then her family carries it on...the place reverberates with the chant.
- The most scary part, and I don't know how DD did it...when he shoots the stool, and she 's hanging there for a few seconds at least. I'm wondering how they shot that, I did not see anything around that could have protected her, or anything to indicate it was a cheat shot.
- I loved it ...while RK holds her up, and she tries hard to get out the binding around her hands. She's not an ablaa nari, she's trying desperately to get out of it herself. Complete team work by both of them.
- Madhu recovers and RK tells her to run, but she comes back, protects him. And once again stuns RK...his expression was classic, .her deewangee for him never ceases to surprise him.
- Madhu was smiling all through, when she realises he's gone into a trance and is going to kill Balraj, her face changes, she runs and stops him.
- RK's face when he thinks that Madhu's been shot...he looks like he's lost everything, he looks like he wants to die himself
- Padmini's rage...her helplessness initially turns into rage, her dialogue to Balraj when she's tied, and he says...yeh kaun bola...chuhiya or something...
- I also recognised that the episode brought out... the whole attitude of Balraj and his gang...violence is the way of life for them, and total disrespect for women is ingrained in them. This actually deserves a whole analysis by itself. When Madhu covers RK, the men continue beating her, they don't even pull her away, so that they can continue beating up RK...it is scary, you know that kind of disrespect. It was violent but they did manage to bring out the patriarchal, misogynistic nature of men who don't know any different.
Phew...this is from one viewing, just last night's viewing. if i do get to watch it again, am sure I will notice far more.

Odd and unexpected but I really enjoyed the episode. As a matter of fact so did my kids who went about cheering RK everytime he delivered a punch.
A few days back I was ranting that they gave Ballu an easy death and I wanted my pound of flesh, I wanted him to suffer. However after seeing today's episode, I was appeased. Ballu raised hell ...Balraj style and it was time for him to exit the story...the fact that his chuhiya biwi killed him is cause for enough shame on his part given the mindset he has.
I agree that the sequence was not necessarily logical but then when I don't question the logic in "Ek Tha Tiger" or "Dabangg"or "Son of Sardar", why would I demand it of a tv show. I agree that the sequence had several bloopers and some parts seemed unnecessarily dragged but still it was a praiseworthy effort. The star of today's show were Ballu, RK , Madhu and Sikky.
There were some very subtle touches that I liked-
1)Rk provides an explanation on why he is able to pull off action sequence so well - he does his own stunts. Given the ego, agression and confidence RK sports, I never expected him to use his brain and use his car to fight or play possum when the goons started to leave. From a certain perspective he is an alpha male and someone has dared to threaten his family and his love, his agression and instinct has taken over-he needs to hit and beat something up. Made complete sense to me.
2)Lot of people have commented on the quality of dance -I actually found the unpolished chawani chap dance very realistic. Ballu did not invite professional dancers, he probably picked the girls from some shady dance bar so thier steps were perfectly in alignment with thier character.
3)The moments when Madhu was hanging by the noose were terrifying. Rk does not free her, she does it on her own though I wondered why she did not try that before probably she needed to see RK getting beat up to give her the necessary push. I also liked that when she gets down there is a sheen of tear in her eyes and she takes a minute to gather herself gagging and coughing - again very realistic . She actually rest her head on the pillar trying to breathe until she realizes that RK is still getting beaten up and jumps back into the fray.
4)Seeing Madhu with rope around her neck must have triggered some really bad memories in RK. He seemed to be on autopilot when beating Ballu up until Madhu brings him to his senses. I liked that Madhu's smile turned into apprehension and then fear as she clocked on RK and realized what he meant to do. I alos liked the fact that instead of shouting RK ruko...she actually holds his arm and caresses it almost as if trying to calm him down.
5)I liked the fact that as the time went on you see Padmini's changing avatar- she is shocked and scared in the beginning, then she proceeds to begging...and then demanding ...at the end she is practically threatening Ballu. Her rage begans to take over so much so that it gives her strength to pick up a gun and shoot her husband.
6)Almost everyone was in character- Bhatias are not aware of the backstory nor are they aware of chaudhary riches. All they know is that Madhu's dad was an evil man and Paddo ran away in order to protect her daughters. As expected Radha tries to buy Ballu with money at first, she closes her eyes scared when RK is hit. Kukuji too seemed a little taken aback and sad when he thought RK had died.Maybe he is not such a bad man, maybe he did marry Radha with good intentions but years of insults from RKand Radha's singleminded obsession with RK has made him what he is today. Sikki seemed concerned for his stepbrother and Madhu though he decided to dance to Gazar ne kiya hai ishara. Dips looked pleased and happy though a little aggravated until she saw RK charge in. I thought I saw hints of jealousy and concern when she saw Rk take a beating for Madhu. Rishbala's obsession, trust and pride in each other was very obvious today. Almost everyone seemed to be counting on RK including Trishna.
7)Balraj has been aware of this marraige for last 9 days,I am not surprised that he made arrangements for all the firepower along with the Rocket launcher. Also liked that RK got hit by it, I have always wondered how heroes seem to come out unscathed in face of such firepower in movies.
8) Bittuji does come with police so I guess RK did call him up before he dialed Madhu back.
9)RK's face when the gunshot sounds and he sees blood on Madhau's face. It felt like someone has closed his oxygen tank.
10) Loved Ballu's dialogues and they were delivered with righ amount of oomph.
11)The general mayhem during the beatings when Madhu covers RK's back.
There were few things I did not get
1)Where did the swing come from on the venue...I do not remember seeing it when the Maliks and Bhatias walked in. I guess Dammad and FIL are more alike than they would like to admit. One drags rocking chair of his father everywhere he goes, other travels with a swing set,his amma loved.

2)Why did we have female constable in the police party that arrives with Bittuji?
3)I had hoped Shamsher would break the column Dharam style but then that would probably be taking the bollywood style too far.
