Episode 236 Discussion: 3rd April 2013

Holi Hai !!! Sultan wins the contest of "Who colors Madhu first" and Rishabh Kundra wins the contest of Who plays the Dhol for long".

Events of the Episode
  1. Madhu plays Holi with Padmini, Chawl friends, Aryan and saves herself from being colored by anyone. While playing Holi she mothers Aryan with extra attention; breaking the dance and paying attention to what Aryan is eating. Madhu is dancing to "Rangeela Maro Dholna, Dholna Re". Sultan is watching her. RK driving thru car has reached Chawl. Watches Madhu dancing.
  2. As dance ends he gets ready to color Madhu. [He somehow insanely has imagined that Madhu would be left uncolored and wait for him. He is insanely thinking that Madhu exists in some paranormal world where her Mother or friends or other chawl neighbours will keep her uncolored for him waiting for him so that he can color her first.] As he walks in slow motion for at least 5 minutes, when Madhu has felt an odd presence in the space; Madhu has simultaneously taught Aryan how to play Holi with his father. Aryan goes and pumps colored water him. Sultan smiles and he too gets ready to play with Aryan with color filled hands. However missteps on a pichkaari, causing him to lose balance and thus accidentally becomes the first one to color Madhu. Red color has fallen on her forehead. RK watching all this is flustered that he lost it, he was not the first one to color her. He drops color from his hand, stops in his tracks.
  3. Sultan apologizes to Madhu, MB says its okay and then Aryan and Sultan start playing where Aryan causes Sultan to fall down. Madhu gives a hand lift support for Sultan to get up. Sultan smilingly takes the hand and this is all being observed by RK, who is obviously burning in jealousy.
  4. Padmini leaves, asks Madhu to come after finishing her play. Sultan picks up a Dhol and starts playing it. Madhu sees him enjoying at that. She is elated and all in smiles. Soon they both hear another drum sound. They don't know who the drummer is. Sultan starts playing too, but the other drummer is playing it non-stop. It is revealed that it is RK all smeared in red color. RK continues to beat the drums and he drowns Sultan's drumming. He wins the competition.:)))
  5. Then Sultan keeps his drum down, RK keeps his drum down. RK then pulls Madhu towards him. Sultan tries to intervene. RK stops him and says "She is my wife". Sultan retreats with Aryan and Kaka. RK and Madhu start dancing over Piya ki Rang Deeni song in mixed Bollywood and Contemporary dance. An upset Sultan watches them as a happy RK with a new kind of intensity and passion, creates conflict for Madhu  who is helplessly drawn drawn to him, yielding to him, in pain for being still affected by him. Episode ends with them in each others embrace.

Rants
Couldn't watch the episode. Very distasteful for my personal taste.

Both the man and wife are made for each other. Two crazy people and shameless. One doesn't know how flirtatious she seems and other doesn't know where to draw the line. He comes shamelessly there and she allows him to dance with her. Couldn't she have escaped to her Apartment ? How difficult was that ?!!1

Why O Why ? Men like Sultan have to fall for a woman who is available and yet not available. He doesn't look crazy. Doesn't he know the rules of this crazy show that he needs to be crazy to be with Madhu forever. Sigh !!!

Shri I have to ask since I'm not quiet sure of the intricacies- why is Sultan coloring Madhu first such a big deal? Is it ritual or tradition that the significant other color each other?
I also found it interesting that he colored Madhu's forehead, not her maang.
And RIshbala pda was...well a little distasteful to be honest. Agree with you there. It was all about ownership, and I'm sure everyone in the chawl is wondering what is actually going on given that RK publicly humiliated Madhu there...

There was NO Humilation. As man and wife they were having steps that are coming across  to you as humiliation.  Watch for more Bollywood films. All the reluctant heroines, having these guilty pleasures act like that.

And yes, ownership; it was there. Why not ? If the woman is senseless enough to be giving flirtatious advances to other men, then her man who has rights on her will behave like that...everyone knows this.

If Madhu really had to be a decent woman, she could have acted like one...not like Rekha of Silsila.  Madhu is as passionate as she can get. She doesn't exercise restraints. So she is okay with Rishabh's gestures. Men like Rishabh don't go out and do it just for the kicks...his woman made him act like that.  And please ...don't give me explanations...I know what I am talking. I never liked Silsila ...

Holi...there's a decent one, there's a passionate one.  Madhu being a married woman...and Sultan being paraya man, cannot apply color like that unless they are friends etc...I have seen men applying tika to each other, women playing holi with each other...but not man and woman who are not related to each other.  I am talking about Delhi and Hyderabad cities where I lived. So I am not a Guru of Holi playing.

I am RK's biggest fan, but today, while I admired his chutzpah, I was disgusted by his behaviour towards Madhu. Does he really expect to just waltz in and make love to her in the middle of the chawl like she's a rag doll? After all that he has done to her?

He has no respect for her. He considers her his property. This is not love.

Poor, poor Madhu. I felt for her today. Despite her best efforts, she loves this kameena and was helpless against his onslaught.

When RK makes up his mind, he really lays it on thick. Now we know why the coochie-coo scenes earlier were just not that hot.

But, but, the dance was borderline abusive. Sultan could see that. He knows all is not well in this relationship...if he wants to, he can make inroads with Madhu, via Aryan of course.

What a mess! What a story!

Sultan was the one who was violating the rules, standing there and watching the couple, when RK actually told him she is his wife. Sultan could see RK was angry.  So why was he even looking ?

The dance was PDA and not abusive. If Madhu felt hurt, why not flee ? Who was she saving, her abusive husband ?!!!

Talk about loose passions.

A man falls for a woman who is still chained in marriage.
A husband who comes to his wife without giving a notice, especially after estrangement.
A wife who allows her husband to play Holi with her instead of taking him into quarters to talk privately.
A woman who gives her hand to man (Sultan) to support him...even if Rishabh Kundra was not there...was it necessary ? She has been giving him too many open passes.

I agree Shri...today Madhu broke the law of acceptable behaviour with Sultan. After offering her hand, she no longer has the excuse that she did not understand what Sultan was thinking or how flirtateous she came across.
Rk was well within his rights to come and meet his estranged wife and color her first ...get jealous and act the way he did . In fact I would continue to argue that Madhu instigates RK to behave in his unhinged way again and again.
Why was Sultan jealous?...did he think that RK was forcing Madhu but he also knows that RK loves Madhu...I am lost.

THE FESTIVAL

posted by myself

Holi is also a well-understood uncensored-sensual-passionate festival between married couples/people in love.  Isn't it why it was called Raas Leela...as called the game between Krishna and his Gopikas. Most famous Holis are from Mathura and Vrindavan...Lord Krishna's hometown.

Isn't it therefore that mothers are more careful, who is applying color to her teenaged daughter ? My mom was careful to watch me about my male cousins with whom I grew up...forget strangers. Fine I might be a prig and come from a priggish family...but I have personally felt the onslaught of power when people apply color on you. Holi is a play with colors, but is also a power play of physical force...we all knew how to escape the hitting balloons, the hiding, the running, the coercion. All power play is maaf (forgiven) because it is ...bura na maano Holi Hai.

Anyways...let's just have a complete different view of Holi. And I would have liked Madhu playingLathmaar Holi with Rishabh Kundra and Sultan. LOL!

And look at this Phoolmar Holi.

Breaking barriers, Vrindavan widows play a colourful Holi

I am unable to find good videos for Brij and  Vrindavan Holi...where they play with water

Guys,
This is just my pov so please take me in the right context. Why are we so stuck on the type of the dance here. It is just a form of expression, communication between these 2 dopey individuals. How does it matter if it is contemporary or classical or what not. I would not have given it a second thought if they had managed to do a fusion bharat natyam, lavani, garba, bhangada and rock-n-roll all in one on the Holi day in that dance. What matters to me is what is being communicated and how effectively the medium is being used. If that is achieved, the means to do it is immaterial.

This comment will tell you how much of an expert I really am on the different forms of dance. No offense to any puritans here.

It mattered to me because it spoiled Holi for me and when I had already a premonition that this Holi was going to be disastrous with expected consequences.

It mattered to me because contemporary+ballroom dance on Holi in a Chawlyard was incongruous to me ...and I don't like incongruity (like people reacting to the photo pic in Dec or the buck toothed painting from saturday).

It mattered to me because I still believe that festivals are also days to remember God and bond in collective spirit.

It mattered to me because I believe that Art mimics life and especially a Holi sequence can have dances natively played by people that are supported by musical instruments such drums, cymbals etc, I never imagined contemporary will be played creating an abstract field.

I believe that when I am watching a drama, I watch it as a drama of fictional people who are like me, belonging to my religion, have same kind or moral, social and cultural understanding.

Saving grace was that man was husband to wife when he danced like that. That's why most people enjoyed as there was no censorship. What would have happened if the man was not married to the woman ? ==> Societal understanding.  What should I think  now...a man dancing with woman when he told her that they are no longer man and wife ==> moral understanding. This is why I feel, Madhubala Malik should have initiated formal marriage break proceedings from this man...but nope she chose to be stuck with that man who causes pain to her. She called him a sadist, and I call her masochist.

It mattered to me because all of this disgust, pain, needs now a resolution and my build-up with respect to the climax and anti-climax of the drama to ensue.

It mattered to me because this is drama and it is not magically conjured in front of you with a snap of finger, that it is a drama that was planned from last three weeks by the CVs and apalled at the idea of using this kind of dance form in Holi (incongruous).

Which reminds me the mockery of pouring alcohol in the havan, that Kabab drama during Ganeshotsav, the Sargi drama of Karwa Chouth.

I still hold my head on my shoulders and I don't buy anything that is sold to me,without seeing the need and the attractive appeal about it...and that too when that dance and step wan not even mesmerizingly original...when all I could say was..."not again that boring lift"  The dramatist as artist failed to impress me...he did not take me into a trance with so many disharmonious elements.

Wow ! What a superb spectrum of views !

Well, for me it was quite a hyperventilation-and-vertigo-inducing episode !!! Entertainment entertainment entertainment all d way ...

"Ghar se chale khaake qasam
 Chhodenge peechha na hum
 Sarpe qafan bandhe hue
 Aya diwaana yahaan" ...

So, our superstar(brat) has not budged much from d position he was in at d end of Saturday night epi. Everything is still about his egotism , his sense of entitlement n his possessive claims ...

To me, that dance definitely did not have any element of affection in it; Passion - Yes , but Affection - No ... n neither did it seem to matter to either of the two, if d public was watching or not ... it was all about RK imprinting his brand name on his 'biwi' ... n Madhu trying to fight him off, and yet, with pain - yielding to her passion for him, despite  her self ... ( and I think d smirk on his face was because he could sense her yielding ) ... but what a hot number it was ... n beautifully choreographed too - fultoo Filmy ...

Reminded me of their dance on d party night ... this could be d optimist in me - but somehow it feels as if everything has come a full circle ... he started his ruthless revenge drama then ... will this day end by being witness to its culmination ... by making Rishab Kundra finally realize d extent of his transgressions - as Rji was hoping ?  ... shayad BhujangBhai issmey hamari koii madad kar deyn ... janne ke liye dekhte rahiye MBEIEJ

Btw , loved it when Sultan defeated RK in d first round , by 'accidentally' putting pehela rang on Madhu - served him right ... ( well rang maathe pe lagi hai mang mey nehi ... does it imply that Sultan will be instrumental in shaping her life's path , but will never have her Love ) ...
But  Absolutely Loved it when RK beat SultanBhai at d Dhol contest - ( the Drum being the symbol of the Heart ) ...

Uttara,
Thank you for that review. Gives me peace. I needed that. It was one of those days, where I needed pep-talk through taking me to higher realms where I leave behind my pragmatism through something that I might have missed. And your post achieved that for me...a nice balance that I needed and with that bolded part at the end of your post.

Shri
My pleasure ...  glad u liked it ...    ... here, take this tight-wala hug ...
You see, to me - beating on d drum is chiefly about calling up d Essence of Being ... Remember Ganpati Visarjan ... how his final reconciliation with Bappa was preceded by that trance-like state with d Dhol ...
posted by myself

I got that essence of the scene. What I did not know was that Drum is the symbol of heart. In Instrumental, I like drums and percussion sound best.

Anyways I can also share this with you. Zoya was asking me why I was so upset and why I cannot let it go as something expected of the besharam man  and she was upset that probably I missed something that she saw and now that standing on different levels between me and her... was not okay for her.  Finally inspite of my mood, I managed to calm her that indeed I saw what she saw.. and she must have gone to bed peacefully.

Here it is...

Rishabh by meaning is a bull. So as a man of that class, he was practical, dogged and held his ground. He could have gone back...but his duty there, was to claim his woman back before the other man and claim he did. He has come to color her in his passion, which he never showered on her till date. And he did without any cover...it was flowing. Everyone was offended that he smiled at her yielding, but for me it was good he smiled...that showed his confidence. Everything is fair in love and war. That's their story. And that's how he has enchained her to him. Tootke nafrat kiya, now tootke mohabbat karoonga.

And the other meaning of Rishabh is Musical Note Ri of Sa Re/Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni.

THE DANCE

Thank you EML.

This step flows from contemporary dance.

Its disharmonious that contemporary dance was chosen by Rishbala for dancing in Chawl-yard with Holi as background. The conservative and traditional person in me would have preferred a dance form native to Holi festival.  When its jarring like this, what did I feel as the viewer. The contemporary form stamped on my mind that the two people who are dancing away in all passion are totally oblivious to the world around them.  There was an abstract element involved in their dance, as if they were supposed to forget the background and their current situation and just douse themselves in their passions.

But here is my dilemma. I was playing Holi all enjoying the festivity. Now where do I go ? when these people decided to siege the stage (chawlyard) and go on with their dance ? I am a reluctant viewer here...Do I have to stand or retreat ? What happens to my Holi ? And what is Sultan doing there ? Watching their passionate dance and feeling unpleasant about it, making the viewer in me cringe more. Am I being a voyeur ?!!!

Then in between Bollywood type of steps are thrown for the contemporary dance...breaking one of them from the trance, showing me what a guilty pleasure it seemed to one of them.

Agree contemporary dance is most free form with all creative freedom and nothing to be analysed there and just the see the emotions expressed.  And agree Rishbala dance gave all that access to them.

Why I am reacting ? Holi background ?!!!  ==> okay I get it two passionate souls, connected in passion and not connected in love.  And what is Holi about? Holi is about Love.

Like I said yesterday - they are not connected in love, but they are very much two separate islands of love and passion pulling them towards each other.
  • Rishabh Kundra - I have to claim her back. I shall be the one to color her in passion with my love.
  • Madhu - I have color of love back in my life. I have shut him out of my life who gives me pain and I have welcomed this boy into my life who is now my joy.
Against this perspective...am I too imprisoned or narrow-minded. What is that I need to liberate myself to ? How I am to allay myself from being the realist ?
  • If I liberate myself - then I have to accept  that  "Rishabh Kundra was right. Madhubala Malik was right. - they are connected in passion."
  • If I am narrow-minded/caged then I have to accept that  "Rishabh Kundra was wrong. Madhubala Malik was wrong. - it was not the time, not the place, not the occasion. They have far too many barriers to even think of loving each other"
  • If I am realistic, then I have to accept that - "Sultan was right. Sultan was wrong. - He was right to leave, wrong to watch." He could have stayed and fought RK if it was so hurting him to watch Madhubala Malik with her husband. Else he could have turned away his gaze if he felt disgusted by the couple's close dance.

There did I now explain, why my review was like that ?

It was quite adult in making that PDA -contemporary dance - the free movements, the independence between dance and music, the dance to be just danced and not analyzed- during a Holi sequence.

I need to see harmony and purpose in everything. The dance caused disharmony to me in all poetic sense and I took my pain and irrationality of it in anger and disgust.

And as always ST/CVs revel in drama that creates disgust to drive their point.

Sweetdear,
Page 14 I've  posted videos. And my question is ...was there a continuity in the choreography for episode 236 (aired on 3rd Apr) ? Did you see harmony between the emotion, dance, dance form and the platform ?
I got the feeling that the point of choreography was to invoke disgust rather than elation.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Shri, feel so honored here with your invite.thank you very much.

Let me pen down what I felt looking at the dance here...purely my pov.

Dance is primarily has to be the expression of the inner most feelings. As a choreographer(not full time though ), I do  feel dance is the best way to express when everything else fails, it also helps to portray the equation between two individuals.
I read your post in  which u said you were not happy with the dance form. But being a dancer, I have realized, in any of our Indian dance forms  like for ex, Bharatanatyam,Kathak, folk etc..there can not be much intimacy shown..whereas contemporary dance form allows two people to get close and in the process won't invoke any disgust.

I agree Lord Shiv-Parvathi are known to express their passion through dance and they have always shown dancing in Bharath Natyam. Whereas Krishna, Radha and Gopikas'  danced in Kathak. But the thing is not everybody can emote so well and Bharatanatyam, Kathak( Indian classical form)requires and it requires many years of rigorous practice and dedication. Hence the current set of choreographers tend to take the easy and explainable way to show two people close n intimate by choosing contemporary dance form.

Madhubala:
The dance here shows the conflict of both the individuals..and kudos for selecting such an apt song...the lyrics suited so well to this situation of two stubborn yet giving in couple.

If we observe the dance, Initially Madhu resists his pull...couple of times..and that's when he smirks..cos he knows she might initially resist but for sure she is going to end up in his arms..and thats when he pulls her to their signature pose. The smirk in his dance should be treated as his confidence that in the end she belongs in his arms and he will make sure she is there where she belongs.
Whereas Madhu's dance comprises of her anger at herself for giving in to him so easily, her hurt due to their past..hence she doesn't smile. and also at the same time she is very clear that this is where she belongs though with little disgust at him for making this a PDA..hence she continues to dance and doesnt jerk him away!!she actually does not want to give in but so helpless she can't stop herself from doing it and hopelessly tries to get away from him at every opportunity only to end up being so close to him. This is when he pulls,twists...This is when they describe her as morni..and him as mor as he is dancing for her..to woo her!! Raag n Raagini as they are inseparable!!

Jaise Chaand Ke Sang Chandani
Jaise Raag Ke Sang Hai Ragini
Jaise Bhari Basant Mein Morani
Piya Ke Rang Rang Deeni Odhani

Now the LIFT... It's basically for both of them..as they both longing to be with each other in each other's embraces...
The beauty of the lift here being..their inner most intimate desire of submitting to each other unconditionally ..complete SAMARPAN!!! And hence the lyrics...
Tujhe Pehanu Odhu Bichaau Main
Tujhe Bhar Ke Saanson Mein Gaau Main
During the lift, they both feel at bliss hence they close their eyes involuntarily to relish the heavenly moment.

There is a moment where he twirls her so harshly that she stumbles..this is his punishment for her as she didn't give him his haq(right) of being the first one to apply her the color..and he clearly has the haq to even hurt her whenever she snatches his haq from him but at the end he will be always be the ONE who will CATCH her when she is about to fall to save her n will be her savior forever!!!

I have tried my best Shri... Please lemme know what you all have to say. Hope I did justice here while explaining on both the dances.

@bolded - agreed and totally valid. That's what I said too in my page 14 post.  So that means I took it correctly.

>>>>>
Re Rishbala dance.
I understood everything that you explained here...I saw the same things when watching and felt the same emotions...Why RK is smirking, why is he pulling and twisting her and why it was right of him to do so...his confidence and his right...and yet I felt disgusted.  And I was angry that Madhu did not break away from him and run to her apt.  Why she needed to be standing upto him, when its gonna hurt her only.

That day my first post was about how it had been difficult to watch and to augment my pain Sultan was watching to stamp it ...that I was feeling it correct. So my conscience wanted him to close his eyes and not look at man and wife...telling him...they are enacting their story, their drama and so don't react. In my post I said the same to Sultan which in fact I was telling myself.  The same I had explained to pnars later on middle pages (I guess page 9).

So now I understand, why I was so disgusted and was pained. I was pained for Madhu so much that I was angry ...not at her yielding (that I already take it as granted and given), not at Rishabh's claiming, wooing and hurting her (I already accept that lovers have the right to hurt each other, punish each other and make it up also) ...I was angry that Madhu gave the opportunity for him to claim her...I really wished her to be like she was today in Sat episode...lashing at him. She should have done Laasya instead. Later on I cooled down by talking respite in watching Lathmaar Holi.

>>>>>>>>
I think what I felt most that day was...my posts generated lot of unnecessary flak with focus on my anger... I made my peace and came back to EDT, only to see lot of reaction there.

I needed some objective answer that also took me close to LOVE...someone showing me not pain but that there is hope. Don't worry kinds...  I got that only from Uttara's post...through that Drum symbol.

The way you have explained Madhu's pain and the lift. EML has worded the same exact thing on Page 5.

Gosh!! I get so emotionally angry at injustice of the situation that my rationale keeps shouting even before I am able to take the pain...And inspite of all my understanding of later things, I become the hard-hearted person, showing my cold logic, instead of being sympathetic.  I was so with Madhu that day and yet I came across as the one who was not with her. Sigh !!! my inexplicable emotional reactions.

Thank you very much.  Your response restores me now.  As in all that anger I felt at PDA and the disgust I had was actually being given out by Madhu herself, and I got more angrier that she was causing it to herself.

I needed this explanation otherwise I would have gone to my grave, thinking why my reaction was so extreme when so many others were able to give their response in different manner. I am usually so quick in things, that sometimes it gets difficult for me to articulate what are the n number of reasons at my simple NO or YES and that too when I say it with vehemence and keep sticking to it. I know I am right, but it hurts me very much for being responsive in that manner.

I think when I react like this next time and get the urge to post it (because I feel I need to express/show the injustice to everyone), I should not.  I should just write it my blog...wait...and then slowly try to articulate my point...because this is not work...and not any real life situation to be acting swift;y...it is just a drama...but since it is art, which I really appreciate, I would still like to add my commentary...I should just take deep breath and go slow...

Once again as that technical expert explaining to me, I thank you. My need is to be conceptually clear.

You are most welcome Shri. And thank you so much for liking it.
I understand your anger Shri... One thing to note is geet was a girl who failed to impress her boss and faced his wrath by flowing in his passion whereas Madhu who was yielding here is a wife who loves her husband insanely.
If u observe  the dance you will notice she was phasing in and phasing out through out the dance..reg your question about her not fleeing back to her apt..she is a woman Shri..a woman in love...a woman in desperate need to be loved back by the same person...who was constantly struggling between anger and passion...and I don't think it's that easy to break away from the spell of passionate desire of being close to the loved one after being away for so long... so she tried hopelessly to pull herself away whenever reality struck her...but guess passion overrides anger when love is in charge.

It's completely ok to feel the way you felt Shri...it's the natural tendency to express oneself .
Per my pov...The main thing is not miss the beauty that every moment brings on to us. And well in this case, irrespective of past and hurt...Rishabh and Madhu.. The lovers were into each other forgetting the world ...stealing a very few moments of intimacy in their own way.
